Leaven Community Highlights

Music in our Neighborhood!
SATURDAY, MARCH 18
7pm
LEAVEN COMMUNITY CENTER

Let's meet the people in our neighborhoods and share a little life together. Come and bring someone (and even a snack to share) to Portland Chamber music's first-time, soul-stirring performance at Leaven Community Center!

The music of composers affected by the Holocaust will be performed along with the Afro-American Suite by Undine Smith Moore for flute, cello and piano and Night by Florence Price. I Have a Dream, by Abba, will be the audience sing-along.

Come for an evening of connection and inspiration!

Out of our shared stories and relationships, we will have opportunity to identify and act collectively on at least two pubic issues impacting our community. One issue Leaven Community is in discernment around is what Sanctuary looks like as we accompany our neighbors under the threat of deportation, including our capacity for providing physical Sanctuary (if it is needed).

Listening Campaign Intercambio (Language Exchange) House Meetings
Our house meetings include an Intercambio (Spanish-English language exchange) gathering. At the Intercambio gatherings paired language partners are sharing meals and their stories over four consecutive weeks. For additional information contact Mira: miraconklin@yahoo.com

LEAVEN LEADERS AFFIRM STATEMENT OF SANCTUARY SUPPORT

One goal will be to discern as Leaven Community how we could be physical sanctuary with someone facing the threat of deportation.

As a next step in our process of discerning how Leaven Community can be Sanctuary with our neighbors, Leaven Community Board of Directors and Salt & Light's Congregational Mission Leader Team affirmed with consensus their commitments in the following Statement of Sanctuary Support: Read More

LEAVEN LEADERS AFFIRM COMMITMENT TO EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The Leaven Community Board of Directors, recognizing that equity, diversity and inclusion are critical components of our work for justice and the common good, has committed to an Equity Engagement and Strategy Process in partnership with the Center for Diversity and the Environment. We will...

  • build a diverse cohort representative of our communities to explore issues of equity in our organization and the world
  • adopt a common understanding of the problem, and
  • hone our strategy and capacity for achieving equitable outcomes, starting with diversity within our board, members and partners.

Through this process, we will move toward our vision of being a vibrant multicultural, intergenerational community with the power to address the pressures on our lives as we live into our common dreams of a more equitable Portland where everyone thrives.
