Out of our shared stories and relationships, we will have opportunity to identify and act collectively on at least two pubic issues impacting our community. One issue Leaven Community is in discernment around is what Sanctuary looks like as we accompany our neighbors under the threat of deportation, including our capacity for providing physical Sanctuary (if it is needed).

HAVE AN INTENTIONAL CONVERSATION WITH A LOVED ONE, FRIEND, NEIGHBOR!

Our practices of engaging in 1 with 1 conversations are the foundation for building trust and understanding about our mutual interests, passions, pressures and visions for Leaven Community and our neighborhoods.

1. Identify someone in whose story you are curious.

  • What do you already know about them? What do you want to explore and what might you need to be sensitive to

2. Schedule a time to meet and talk for about 45-60 minutes using these guiding questions:

  • How did you/your family come to live in this neighborhood?
  • What are the greatest pressures/threats to you/your loved ones/neighbors for being able to stay where you/they live...or pressures/threats impacting your/their life?
  • What are your hopes and dreams for community over the next ten years? What does that look like?

During your conversation

  • Be reciprocal. This is not an interview; give and take.
  • Look for common interests and experiences.
  • Seek understanding.

3. Respect your time limit.

  • Respect their time and schedule a time to come back together if you both want to continue the conversation.

4. Think about next steps.

  • Would this person be interested in attending a house meeting? If so, invite them to a house meeting.

5. After your conversation, reflect and journal on what was shared.

  •  What impact did the meeting have on you? What stirred you? What raised questions about your own story, interests or passions?
  • What are some other questions you would like to ask if you are meeting again?

LEAVEN LEADERS AFFIRM STATEMENT OF SANCTUARY SUPPORT

2014 Sanctuary action at Augustana Lutheran

One action generated out of our 2016 Listening Campaign is discerning how Leaven Community can be Sanctuary with our neighbors.

Sanctuary Lead Team
We have formed a Leaven Community Sanctuary Lead Team to lead us in listening, research and discernment of action related to Sanctuary and to connect us with the broader Sanctuary movement through participation in a Sanctuary Cohort convened by the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice (
IMIrJ).

Listening
Our Sanctuary Lead Team is part of our Leaven Community Core Leader Team, that will be leading us in a Listening Campaign this winter to develop relationships across Leaven Community and out into our neighborhoods.

Discernment and Action
Out of our Listening Campaign, we will discern actions that respond to our collective stories, including those around immigrant justice and accompaniment. One goal will be to discern, as Leaven Community, how we could be physical Sanctuary with someone facing the threat of deportation.

Leaven Community Board of Directors and Salt & Light's Congregational Mission Leader Team affirmed with consensus their commitments in the following Statement of Sanctuary Support:

Leaven Community Statement of Support for Sanctuary
As the elected leadership bodies and staff of Leaven Community, including Salt & Light Lutheran Church, we respond to the call from our immigrant members, friends and neighbors to support and co-create Sanctuary with the most vulnerable among us, particularly those who face an increased risk of criminalization, detention and deportation because of immigration status or country of origin, by leading Leaven Community forward in the following ways:

  • Continuing to cultivate safety for people of every human category to fully be themselves and to experience protection from harm, whether within relational space, our physical space or in gatherings outside the building.

  • Rooting ourselves in our own migration stories and the immigrant story that is woven through the narratives and histories of our spiritual and faith traditions.

  • Listening deeply to the stories of our vulnerable immigrant neighbors as we seek and develop authentic relationships and look to them as leaders in this work.

  • Building collective power through contemplative, relationship-based organizing as we work together with immigrant neighbors to change systems that oppress and criminalize and to enact ones that welcome, connect, and affirm.

  • Showing up for those in our communities who are facing deportation and other injustices related to immigration status or country of origin. This could take the shape of participation in public actions, writing letters of support, accompanying people to court, or providing meals or visits for someone in sanctuary in another setting.

  • Discerning what form physical sanctuary could take on our campus in the event it is needed.

Leaven Community, you are invited to join us in this work!  Develop relationships with your immigrant neighbors.

LEAVEN COMMUNITY SPRING 2016 LISTENING CAMPAIGN & DISCERNMENT ASSEMBLY RESULTS

In the spring of 2016, over 100 people participated in the Leaven Community Listening Season sharing their pressures, hopes and dreams. The stories of our neighbors were connected by the desire for stable families and communities. Through our discernment process the community identified four areas for futher research, planning and action.

  • Conversations around becoming a Sanctuary Community
  • Exploring and engaging in Intentional Practices with Neighbors
  • Building Neighborhood Relationships by co-hosting neighborhood summer gatherings
  • Organizing with neighbors around Housing Stability through actions with community allies and MACG [Metropolitan Alliance for the Common Good]

Carmen was one of six people who shared their pressures, hopes and dreams at Leaven Community's 2nd Sunday Discernment Assembly.
