|An organizing action of Leaven Community members, friends and neighbors|
SWAP is an organizing action of Leaven Community parents and intergenerational adults who have formed a child care cooperative. We meet in a space at Leaven Community Center at 5431 NE 20th Avenue. At full capacity we will meet in the space between 9-1 Monday through Friday, with at least two adult (parents, "grandparents") leading 3-8 children, ages 18 months to preschool-aged, through daily activities. Although we do have some in our midst, we are not childcare professionals. We are loving parents who want to embody nurturing practices for raising young children in community. We want our children to develop lasting, intergenerational relationships in their neighborhoods. We are doing this together to create these relationships and to have access to low cost child care. Recommendations for SWAP Participation
The sharing economy isn’t the easiest, but it is very rewarding. Here is what we think will help SWAP continue to evolve to the best of our interests:
Monthly Gathering (2 hours per month)
The meeting in itself is an orientation of the culture we are creating as part of SWAP, including ongoing nonviolent communication training, and Planning Team meetings and report-back.
Active participation on one Planning Team ( 1 per household)
Time commitment varies as well as work required between Monthly Gatherings. Planning Teams currently include: Logistics and Community Relationships, Safety and Legal, and Co-Working Space Development (for adults).
Weekly Shift Lead or Shift Assistant (4 hours per week)
Parents receiving 8 or more hours of care per week are asked to be a Shift Leader. The Shift Lead plans to arrive at 8:45 and stay afterward for clean-up, etc. The team decides who will lead activities and provide snack.
More info on how to develop materials and plan snacks will be provided at orientation, gatherings and/or online documents.
Emergency Back Up Shift (1-2 sign ups per quarter)
In order to ensure reliable care, we will have someone on-call to cover for illnesses or unforeseen circumstances. You will be asked to sign up for this at your first general meeting.
Two Work parties per year (4 hours each)
Polls will be sent out to plan the best day/time for most families in coordination with the Leaven Facilities Team.
New Family Liason (2 hours/week, 2-4 times/year)
Members will periodically be the point person for new or interested family participants, and, as needed, guide them through the space and routines. This role serves to help new families find a way into the SWAP schedule and continue communications on upcoming meetings and gatherings.
New Family Fee ($) and Ongoing Dues ($)
At this point we are still discerning the costs associated with keeping SWAP financially sustainable in its space. Skills/services can be substituted for money on case-by-case basis.
Parents are welcome to stay in the building and treat it like a coffee shop, without the barista. If you would like to be part of a team to develop the workspace, contact Leaven Community Co-Director, Melissa Reed: email@example.com
Volunteers and Timebank
We welcome volunteers without young children to take part in this community. Our intention is to create a timebank for SWAP parents to provide services to compensate our regular volunteers. What might you offer up?
Date Night Buddies and Last Minute Care
We hope that through regular gatherings you will connect with others who live nearby and can offer care at other times outside of the SWAP.
